Larry O'Brien Will Have his Work Cut out For Him

I am glad that Mr O'Brien got elected as our new Mayor and I am sure he will do a good job. The biggest problem with this election was the fact that every incumbent got reelected. When you think about it Bob Chiarelli took the fall for the failings of this council. These guys like Alex Cullen and Clive Doucete are what the problem is with this city and until the people wake up things are never going to change.

To top that off now we have this woman Marianne Wilkinson elected in Kanata and she is already stirring the pot with the new Mayor. I got this little comment that she left on Larry's blog:

"Larry,
I did not vote for you, don't trust you and don't like what I have seen and heard so far (ie.in the campaign). I certainly do not believe that you will be able to keep taxes down and make Ottawa a better city. Prove me wrong!!
Marianne Wilkinson"

Nice way to start off with the new Mayor Marianne, I guess you will not be much help when it comes to trying to get spending under control. You people on the left don't give a damn for the people of this city as long as you can push your agenda. Even better than that you revel in making it difficult for fiscally responsible people tachieveve their objectives. I suspect you, Alex Cullen, Clive Doucette and the rest of the loony-toons on council are salivating at the opportunity to try and block the new Mayor at every turn.

The more things change in this city the more they stay the same........Marianne you had better watch it, I think Larry isdeligatorer and he may put you in charge of that big dump in Carp and let you rot out there with the rest of the leeches...I mean leachate.

I was under the impression that the "left agenda" in Ottawa was precisely giving "a damn about the people of this city".

P.S. I do find it "weird" that all those "lefty" incumbents have been re-elected with neocon O'Brien as mayor! Have the votes been analyzed yet? I am curious.

Why is it you people on the Left throw the word Neocon around like it is a plague. I doubt you know what that word means so I will give you a lesson.

ne·o·con n: a conservative who subscribes to neoconservativism

ne‧o‧con‧serv‧a‧tism : moderate political conservatism espoused or advocated by former liberals or socialists

These definitions are fron the dictionary and don't appear to be how you would define it.

As for your asertion that the Left Agenda is precisely to give a damn about the people of this city, I dispute that.

The Left Agenda has always been and will always be about promoting their socialist ideals and has very little to do with what is best for the majority of people. These are the people that beleive the Government at what ever level has a responsibility to control every aspect of our lives.

They have no regard for Tax Payers dollars and beleive we should be giving handouts instead of hand ups to people who need it. They are all about ideals and not common sense when it comes to public policy for example this stupid anti-idling bylaw that they are proposing...it is unenforceable and idiotic but yet they intend to pass it. Pure stupidity and I hope Larry O'Brien can put some sense of reality back into city hall.

I agree that the term 'neocon' is equivocal.

Daniel McCarthy put up a quiz and a brief description of sorts about the different ideologies in which he describes the "neocon" as someone who "is more inclined than other conservatives toward vigorous government in the service of the goals of traditional morality and pro-business policies." [Link]

That's the closest definition to my usage of the term when I am discussing Canadian politics in general. However, one must not forget the "warmongering neocons" behind Bush militaristic policies, which has been espoused by the current "conservative" party of Canada that includes former Alliance and Reform parties of which Mr. O'Brien was a supporter.

It is that branch of the neocons, i.e. the "warmongering neocons" that is mainly comprised of former leftists/Trotskyites. Raimondo has covered the topic very well indeed here. Those people have long forgone any "progressive" bent of their former ideologies and have instead travelled to the far right, at the expense of genuine conservatives whose party in the US they have hijacked.

In Canada while there is no clear-defined trajectory of "warmongering neocons" hijacking the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, the same cannot be said of the "theocons" and the "socons", but that is another story.

Bottomline, I did not use the term "neocon" in describing Mr. O'Brien loosely. I was referring, however, to his economic and social bent.

I find it very amusing that so many people in this city seem to think that Larry O'Brien is a Conservative and where they get the idea he is far right even confuses me more. Larry O'Brien uses to be a Cretien Liberal was a cheif fundraiser for the Liberal Party. Hardly the makeup of a hard liner.

O'Brien is a past member of Prime Minister Cretien's Advisory Council on Science and Technology (ACST), as well as past chairman of the Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade (SAGIT) on Information Technologies and Telecommunications.

O'Brien also served as one the co-chair's of the Regional Economic Diversification Opportunities (REDO) committee created in 1996 by the Cretien government to assist public servants who had been downsized.

O'Brien may be considered right of centre compared to Chiarelli and Munter but right wing extreamist, I don't think so.

If you consider getting tough on crime and cutting wasteful spending at City Hall right wing then I would agree with you. Not only will I agree with you but I would also applaud these inititives. For far too long the idealists have had the run of city hall and it is time the people who pay the bills in this city get to have their voices heard.

Thanks, Craig, for the update. Maybe you are right. Perhaps it is too early to brand Mr. O'Brien. Suffice it to say that what I've heard up to now - and I admit it's not much - leaves me a bit worried. I'll be watching. I truly hope you are right.

I think the world is ready for some truly compassionate politicians - at all levels of government. No more fake ones!
