CBC is Supposed to be for All Canadians

As a Canadian and a Hockey fan I was very upset at the fact that the CBC did not show live coverage of the Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion tribute on Saturday night March 11th. This was a tribute to a Canadian hockey icon and the extenuating circumstances surrounding it were impossible to ignore. The fact that Mr. Geoffrion was in ailing health but had pledged to make it to the ceremony but couldn't because his condition had worsened made it even more compelling. To make this sad story even more tragic, if that is possible, he succumbed to his illness the very day that he was to be immortalized for ever in the rafters of the Bell Center. As he lay dying he told his wife to go there that night and participate in the ceremony along with the rest of his family. How could the circumstances and mystique surrounding this event be lost on the CBC? I guess the only plausible explanation has to be that the CBC is no longer the bind that ties all Canadians. I am certain that most Canadians, even if they were not hockey fans, would have appreciated this compelling story and would have liked to be there for the family even if it was just symbolic through the magic of television. To make matters worse the previous week CBC and the Toronto Maple Leafs gave a tribute of Tie Domi on playing his 1000th game. I guess they felt that this was an amazing accomplishment by a marginal hockey player and more important than showing the Canadian public a truly unforgettable moment that will forever be etched in the minds and hearts of those who witnessed it. Thanks to the short sightedness and utter disregard for all things that don't emanate from Toronto I like many others across this country will never have that memory.I think it is time that the CBC abandons it's current philosophy with regards to Hockey Night in Canada and start giving the rest of Canadians what we pay for from this Crown Corporation and that is a truly national Public Broadcaster. We want the CBC to cater to all Canadians and give us what we rightly deserve and not just what the ratings tell them. After all the CBC should not be driven by ratings but what is in the best interest of the country. On the night of March 11, 2006 that was clearly the Boom Boom Geoffrion story.
